The U.S. Women's National Team has won five IFWLA World Cup championships in seven tries. Head coach Jackie Pitts led the U.S. to its first world championship in 1982. The U.S. finished second to Australia in 1986 under the guidance of coach Josie Harper. The U.S. rebounded in 1989 with a world championship with a new head coach at the helm. That coach was Sue Stahl who went on to guide the U.S. Women's National Team to four straight IFWLA World Cup titles before finishing second to Australia in 2005. Stahl boasts an unprecedented 4-1 record in World Cup gold medal games. Stahl didn't reapply for the U.S. Women's National Team head coaching position, one she held for over 15 years, after the 2005 IFWLA World Cup.
Former U.S. Women's National team player Sue Heether was named Stahl's replacement on October 27, 2005. Heether will lead the U.S. into the 2009 IFWLA World Cup.
