Cal Poly Wins Seventh Consecutive US Lacrosse WDIA Championship

DENVER – Brittany Jones scored eight goals to lead Cal Poly to a 16-9 victory over Navy in the championship game of the 2007 US Lacrosse Women’s Division Intercollegiate Associates championship at the University of Denver. The championship was the seventh consecutive for Cal Poly, which is now 25-0 all-time in US Lacrosse WDIA tournament play.

Cal Poly, which had to come back from a four-goal deficit in its semifinal victory over Colorado State, led from start to finish. The Mustangs scored the first six goals of the game with Jones, and her sister Janelle, doing most of the damage. Brittany Jones had three goals in the opening spurt and Janelle Jones had two goals and an assist.

Navy scored three of the last four goals of the first half, all by Mary Ruttum, to get within 7-3 at the half, but the Mids were unable to carry over the momentum into the second half. Julie Friesen and Brittany Jones scored goals for Cal Poly in the opening three minutes of the second half.

Navy pulled to within 11-7 on Erin Rawlick’s third goal of the game with 11:22 to play, but Brittany Jones’ seventh goal of the game ignited a three-goal Cal Poly run that put the game out of reach.

Brittany Jones was named the tournament’s Outstanding Offensive Player. Cal Poly’s Jamie Oetman was named the Outstanding Defensive Player.

Semifinal Recaps
Navy 11, UCSB 8
: Navy goalie Vanessa Nieves came off the bench to make 10 saves to spark the Mids to an 11-8 victory in the semifinals. Nieves entered the game with Navy trailing 5-3, but allowed just three goals over the final 41 minutes of the game to allow Navy to rally for the victory.

UCSB freshman Maggie Aker scored two goals and an assist during a three-goal UCSB run in the first half that gave the Gauchos the 5-3 lead, but Navy scored the final three goals of the first half to take a 6-5 halftime lead. Navy's Erin Rawlick, who had a game-high four goals, scored two of those three goals.

UCSB's Katie LaJoie scored first in the second half to tie the game 6-6, but Navy put together another three-goal run, capped by Rawlick's fourth goal with 16:07 remaining, to go in front 9-6. UCSB was unable to get closer than two down the stretch.

Navy meets Cal Poly in the championship game on Sunday at the University of Denver's Peter Barton Stadium at 3 p.m. (Mountain time). The game will be televised nationally on a tape delay basis by CSTV with the first airing scheduled for Wednesday, May 16 at 8 p.m. (Eastern time)

Cal Poly 12, Colorado State 9: Cal Poly held Colorado State to just two goals over the final 39 minutes of the game to come back from a four-goal deficit to defeat the Rams 12-9. Cal Poly advances to the championship game for the seventh consecutive year.

Back-to-back goals by Lindsay Brown just 26 seconds apart gave Colorado State a 7-3 lead with 9:07 remaining in the first half, but Cal Poly trimmed the lead to one by scoring the final three goals of the first half. After Brittany Jones scored for Cal Poly to tie the game to open the second half, CSU tooks its final lead at 8-7 with 23:48 remaining on a goal by Kristen Kasney. Jones then scored her fourth goal of the game to ignite a five-goal Cal Poly run that put the game out of reach.

Jones, and her sister, Janelle, each had four goals for Cal Poly and the sisters combined for all seven of the goals that brought Cal Poly back from a 7-3 hole to a 10-8 lead. Julie Friesen also had a pair of goals for the Mustangs. Kasney and Andee Barocas led Colorado State with three goals each.

Quarterfinal recaps

Navy 15, Colorado 14: Second-seeded Navy overcame an early scare and held on to beat Colorado 15-14 in the quarterfinals. Colorado jumped out to a 5-2 lead midway through the first half, but Navy answered with a five-goal run, highlighted by a pair of goals by Mary Ruttum and Erin Rawlick to take a 7-5 lead. The Buffaloes scored the final two goals of the half to knot it up 7-7 at the half.

Colorado struck first in the seconf half on a goal by Marissa Jaross to take an 8-7 lead, but that would be its last lead of the game. Navy scored the next three goals and stretched its lead to 15-12 on a goal by Rawlick with 3:59 remaining. Maia McPherson scored back-to-back goals to bring Colorado within one with 1:45 to play. CU won the ensuing draw, but turned it over on a false start and Navy was able to run out the clock.

Rawlick led Navy with five goals while Ruttum (4g, 2a), Amanda Towey (3g, 2a) and Elise Chapdelaine (3g) all had big offensive games. Jaross led Colorado with five goals while Kaitlin Moore (4g) and McPherson (3g, 1a) also came up big. Navy will meet UCSB in the semifinals on Friday at 2 p.m.

UCSB 16, Brigham Young 10: UCSB goalie Cassie Sontang made 17 saves and Gaucho attacker Kristen Dickey had five goals as UCSB downed Brigham Young 16-10 in the quarterfinals. Leading 6-4 midway through the first half, UCSB ripped off four straight goals and took an 11-5 lead into halftime. The Cougars were unable to get closer than six in the second half.

In addition to Dickey's five goals, UCSB got three goals and two assists from Maggie Aker and a pair of goals from Katie LaJoie and Brooke Julicher. Brigham Young was led by Ashley Foulger with three goals and an assist. UCSB meets Navy in the semifinals on Friday at 2 p.m.

Cal Poly 19, Michigan State 4: Janelle Jones scored nine goals, including the first three of the game, as six-time defending champion Cal Poly rolled past Michigan State 19-4. Jones, who had five goals in Cal Poly's opening-round win, was just one goal away from tying the US Lacrosse WDIA tournament single game mark of 10 goals set by Navy's Tiffany Hill against Michigan State in 2001.

Molly Sauer and Amber Curry each added three goals for Cal Poly, while the Spartans were led by Kaite Popovich with three goals. Cal Poly will meet Colorado State in the semifinals on Friday at 4 p.m.

Colorado State 16, Michigan 15: Colorado State goalie Brooke Lewis saved a free-position shot from Michigan's Rachel Lary as time expired to help the Rams to a 16-15 victory over Michigan. CSU's Kristin Kasney scored the game-winner with 11 seconds left in the contest, picking up an errant shot and wrapping around the front of the crease for the score.

Michigan led 11-9 at the half and took a 14-11 lead on a goal by Alexis Pavle with 14:44 remaining in the second half. CSU then scored the next four goals of the game, the last three coming from Lindsay Brown, to take a 15-14 lead with 1:11 remaining in the contest. Michigan quickly answered as Noelle Frazier scored with 35 seconds remaining to tie the game 15-15 before Kasney's goal won it for CSU.

Brown led all scorers with five goals while Lisa Long (4g) and Erin O'Brien (2g, 4a) helped pace the CSU offense. Lewis, named a first team All-American on Wednesday, had 17 saves in the victory. Michigan was led by Ashley Steitz with four goals while Frazier and Maggie Preketes each had three. Colorado State advances to the semifinals to meet Cal Poly at 4 p.m. on Friday.

: Erin Rawlick poured in eight goals and added four assists as second-seeded Navy rolled past Oregon 22-7 in an opening round game. The Mids, one of just two teams to have played in all seven WDIA championships, scored the first 12 goals of the game, including four in the opening five minutes. Elise Chapdelaine added five goals and Amanda Towey had four goals and two assists for Navy. Sophie Roullet led Oregon with three goals. Navy meets Colorado in a quarterfinal on Thursday at 10 a.m.

Colorado 12, UCLA 11: Marissa Jaross scored her fifth goal of the game with 1:15 remaining to lift Colorado to a 12-11 come-from-behind victory over UCLA. Colorado led 8-4 at the half, but UCLA stormed back with five goals in the opening 11 minutes of the second half. Marissa Nagler’s fourth goal of the game gave UCLA an 11-10 lead with 5:19 to play, but Jaross scored with 4:35 left to tie the game and then added the game-winner three minutes later. Kaitlin Moore had three goals for Colorado and Sarah Strock, Hayley Wheeler and Lauren Ariniello all had two for UCLA. Colorado meets Navy in the quarterfinal on Thursday at 10 a.m.

BYU 14, Georgia 12: Mackenzie Clark and Claire Thomas each scored four goals as BYU came back to beat Georgia 14-12. The Bulldogs took a 7-6 lead at the half as Lindsay Ruderman scored with nine seconds left in the first half, but BYU opened the second half with a 7-1 run to take a 13-8 lead and held off Georgia’s second-half rally. Elaine Kelch scored five goals to lead Georgia. BYU will meet UC-Santa Barbara in a quarterfinal on Thursday at 10 a.m.

Eight different players scored goals for UCSB, led by Emily Ruby and Jody Weisenhorn with three goals each. Liz Whittemore led Northeastern with three goals. UCSB will meet BYU in a quarterfinal on Thursday at 10 a.m.

Cal Poly 22, Minnesota 6: The top-seeded Mustangs scored the first five goals of the game and cruised past Minnesota 22-6. Janelle Jones scored give goals for Cal Poly, which also got big games from Hayley Saxton (4g), Jackie Pugh (3g) and Brittany Jones (3g). Minnesota was led by Jacqueline Munyon with three goals. Cal Poly will meet Michigan State in a quarterfinal at 1 p.m. on Thursday.

Michigan State 10, Florida 8: Rachel Turkiela made 20 saves as Michigan State pulled away for a 10-8 victory over Florida. Michelle Signorello (5g) and Kaite Popovich (4g) paced the Michigan State offense, combining for nine goals. Signorello’s fifth goal of the game broke a 7-7 tie and gave Michigan State an 8-7 lead it would not relinquish. Shannon Hogan had two goals and an assist to lead Florida. Michigan State advances to meet Cal Poly in a quarterfinal on Thursday at 1 p.m.

Colorado State 13, Lindenwood 4: Brooke Lewis made 10 saves as the Colorado State defense shut down Lindenwood in a 13-4 victory. After scoring just 25 seconds into the second half to pull within 6-3, Lindenwood was held scoreless for more than 29 minutes as the Rams pulled away. Andee Barocas led CSU with five goals and Lindsay Brown added three. Kandee Schroeder paced Lindenwood with two goals. The Rams will meet Michigan in a quarterfinal on Thursday at 1 p.m.

Michigan 12, Pittsburgh 6: Michigan quickly took control by scoring the game's first five goals and went on to defeat Pittsburgh 12-6. Rachel Lary scored two of her three goals during the opening run and the Wolverines also got three goals from Alexis Pavle. Pittsburgh kept it close behind the play of goalie Lauren Masciantonio, who made 21 saves. Michigan goalie Liz Mennen was also solid with 12 saves. Pittsburgh got two goals each from Katie Wheeler and Brittany Malchano.
